Are you a tax analyst in the New York City area making less than $71,780? Then you should probably ask for a raise, because that is below the average, according to organizational consulting firm Korn Ferry. The firm consulted its own pay database, which it says is the largest in the world, to come up with its figures.

Nationally, a tax analyst (1-2 years' experience) makes $60,050. An intermediate tax accountant (2-4 years' experience) makes $66,969. A senior tax accountant (6-plus years' experience) makes $99,625.

Broken down by region, New York City's figures are: $71,780 for an analyst, $79,868 for an intermediate accountant, and $121,041 for a senior accountant. This puts the city above every metro area listed in the study save for San Francisco. That city's scale is $76,272, $84,810, and $125,530.

Tax professionals of all pay levels can learn more about being an effective planner at the Foundation for Accounting Education's upcoming Tax Planning for Individuals Conference, scheduled for Nov. 7,
