The NASBA and the AICPA are seeking public comment on proposed revisions to the continuing professional education standards, part of an ongoing effort to maintain CPE current with how CPAs learn and practice today.

According to Accounting Today, the Sept. 17 exposure draft describes updates intended to reflect new learning technologies, clarify when and how credit should be granted, and continue to make the standards relevant as the profession’s educational needs change.

According to Erin Scruggs, associate director of NASBA’s national registry, the draft represents a broad effort across several committees and stakeholder groups. “As learning technologies and delivery methods evolve, it is essential that the Standards adapt to maintain the quality and integrity of CPE,” she said.

The proposal emphasizes that ongoing professional development plays an important role as firms navigate new tools, regulatory shifts and changing client expectations. Barbara Andrews, the AICPA’s senior director of learning, said: “By engaging in ongoing education, CPAs are empowered to adapt to change, uphold the highest standards of service, and foster lasting trust with those they advise.”
