IRS Announces Next Expansion of Tax Pro Account

The IRS has announced the next expansion of its Tax Pro Account, introducing new business-level digital capabilities designed for tax professionals who work within accounting firms, tax preparation companies, and other organizational settings. The update is part of the agency’s effort to reduce paper-based processes, expand self-service tools, and improve how tax professionals interact with the IRS on behalf of their clients.

With this release, designated business representatives can now manage their firm’s Centralized Authorization File (CAF) access directly through Tax Pro Account. That includes specifying which employees are authorized toact under the business CAF, linking the business CAF number to the firm’s Employer Identification Number, and viewing taxpayer information tied to active authorizations. Firms can also view and withdraw authorizations on behalf of the business, giving organizations greater visibility and control over client relationships that were previously more difficult to manage at scale.

“This taxpayer favorable change will improve the way tax-professional businesses serve their clients,” said IRS CEO Frank J. Bisignano, adding that the update reflects continues investment in technology that streamlines interactions and reduces reliance on paper submissions.

Tax Pro Account, first launched in 2021, initially focused on individual practitioners. This expansion builds on enhancements rolled out in 2023 and 2024 and extends those capabilities to firms that operate using a business CAF number. Sole proprietorships and businesses that do not use CAF systems are not affected by the change, but for larger firms, the update lays the groundwork for future digital improvements aimed at modernizing tax administration.
