The Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) is updating the Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) Challenge Exam to keep up with changes in the profession. Updates include a new pilot program focused on work experience, wider eligibility, and revised exam content to match the Global Internal Audit Standards.

According to Accounting Today, over 200,000 professionals around the world have the CIA designation, which is an important standard for internal auditors. The Challenge Exam, designed for experienced professionals, will soon be more accessible through a six-month pilot program for those with at least 10 years of relevant experience. This initiative is meant to reach senior practitioners, like chief audit executives, who have not yet earned the credential.

“Our priority at the IIA is to stay ahead of the evolving needs of practitioners and ensure our guidance and certifications reflect the expanding role of internal audit,” said Benito Ybarra, executive vice president of global standards, guidance, and certifications. He explained that the updates are designed to make the exam easier to access while still meeting the standards of the profession.

Beginning June 1, 2026, the exam will have one format for all candidates and will be offered year-round, with four testing periods each year. More people will qualify because more accounting bodies are now recognized.
