PCAOB's Botic Outlines Imperatives Auditors Should Follow in 2026

At last month’s AICPA Conference on Current SEC and PCAOB Developments, acting PCAOB chair George Botic framed audit quality around a simple metaphor, reminding auditors that “there is many a slip twixt the cup and the lip.”

That narrow space, he said, is where risk lives, and where vigilance matters most. From that premise, as Journal of Accountancy reports, Botic outlined five imperatives that he believes should guide auditors in the year ahead.

First, he emphasized independence as the foundation of credibility noting that “without credibility, the audit loses its meaning,” and stressing that. Independence must be embedded in firm policies, processes, and culture.

Second, Botic called for a deeper understanding of client operations across engagement teams, arguing that a strong grasp of a company’s business and strategy is essential to identifying and responding to audit risks.

Third, he highlighted professional skepticism, urging firms to foster an environment where every team member knows leadership has an “I’ve got your back” culture when concerns are raised.

The fourth imperative challenged deadline pressure, with Botic stating that “the integrity of the audit matters more than the deadline,” even if additional time delays issuance.

Finally, he underscored the importance of critical audit matters, explaining that CAMs “are windows into the auditor’s most difficult judgements” and signal transparency to investors.

Together, these principles reinforce that audit quality depends as much on culture and judgement as it does on technical compliance.
