The first 90 days of 2015 saw 1,335 people renounce their U.S. citizenship, a record high compared to the same time period in previous years, according to
Forbes. Last year, by this time, 854 people had renounced their citizenship; the year before that was 750; and the year before that was 233. These record-breaking numbers come at a time when Americans abroad, in an effort to crack down on off-shore tax evasion, are heavily scrutinized and regulated in terms of the assets they hold out of the country, to the point where, according to Forbes, many foreign banks simply don't want American account holders due to all of the regulatory measures with which they, too, are expected to comply.
