Big Four firm Ernst & Young conducted the most public company audits in 2017, beating out its other three rivals by over 4 percent, according to Audit Analytics. The firm conducted 921 public company audits, accounting for 14.9 percent of the total last year. PricewaterhouseCoopers accounted for 10.7 percent, Deloitte accounted for 10.4 percent and KPMG accounted for 10.2 percent. The double-digit percentages end there, however, as the fifth largest auditor last year, BDO USA, performed 4.2 percent of public company audits.

The Big Four dominated the market for large accelerated filers in particular, taking more than 90 percent of total market share. EY did 28.3 percent of such audits, PwC did 22 percent, KPMG did 20.5 percent and Deloitte did 19.8 percent. Other firms had stronger showings as companies got smaller: Firms beyond the top 10 made up 78.6 percent of the audits of smaller companies.
