Big Four firm Ernst and Young currently does more public company audits than any other CPA firm, enjoying a generous lead over even its closest competitor in this arena, PwC, according to Accounting Today. The data comes from the firm Audit Analytics, an independent research provider that focuses on the auditing industry and is current as of March 23.

E&Y, at number one, has performed 947 public company audits. In second is PwC at 696; in third is KPMG at 665; in fourth is Deloitte at 642; and in fifth is BDO at 285. The top 10 firms, according to Accounting Today, completely dominated the field for large accelerated filers, auditing 96.5 percent of them. They also audit 71.4 percent of accelerated filers and 69.6 percent of non-accelerated filers. Smaller public company audits, however, are generally performed by smaller firms, as only BDO, RSM and Grant Thornton even ranked in this category.
