The first six months of this year have seen a 160 percent increase in the number of documents lost, stolen or compromised in data breaches compared to the same period of time last year, according to CNBC, growing to 1.9 billion data records over the course of 918 data breaches. The number may not be precise, as 500 of the 918 breaches had an unknown number of records compromised. Meanwhile, 22 of the breaches involved more than one million compromised records. CNBC, though, noted that the growth may be attributed not so much to more attacks happening but more companies reporting them, something that many have been hesitant to do in the past. With more laws and regulations across the world requiring the disclosure of such breaches, the number may continue to grow.
