The AARP, in a recent report, warned that many older workers are concerned that they'll lose their jobs and that age discrimination will stand in the way of getting new ones. The AARP came to this conclusion after surveying a little over 1,000 adults aged 40-65 who had at least some measure of job uncertainty in the past year.

Nearly half, 44 percent, said their older age will hurt them in a job search, although this is the average among three distinct age groups. More discretely, 20 percent of those in their 40s, 59 percent of those in their 50s and 72 percent of those aged 60-65 have this concern. In addition, the survey reports that women are more concerned about age discrimination in future job searches: 47 percent, compared to 41 percent of men. Much of this fear comes from the fact that many aren't sure their skills have kept up with the times: 35 percent haven't searched for a job in more than five years, 44 percent haven't had a job interview in over five years, and 74 percent think they would likely need new skills to find a new job. Should they wind up losing their jobs in 2021, a majority, 61 percent, said their age would be a factor.

The survey shows that many older workers are preparing to respond in such an event by "age-proofing" their resumes (i.e. removing dates to prevent employers from knowing their real age): 62 percent are either very or somewhat prepared to do so. A Bloomberg columnist said that this result indicates the persistence and prevalence of age discrimination despite it being illegal.
