This month's cover story is our annual survey of tax preparation and tax research software. This marks the 16th year this survey of New York tax practitioners has been conducted by authors Susan Anders and Carol Fischer. Although much remains the same for preparers and software providers, each year also provides new and unique challenges. Obtaining needed assistance from IRS and state tax representatives has become a perennial challenge. New provisions that took effect for 2016 were aimed at preventing tax fraud, primarily through delaying the issuance of refunds and giving the IRS more time to verify information. Perhaps the must significant pain point for preparers this past year was an underpublicized requirement by New York driver's license numbers on returns, whose implementation and support in preparation software varied considerably and confusingly.
