The news concerning PricewaterhouseCoopers's (PwC) acquisition of Booz & Company rekindled discussions surrounding independence issues with respect to accountants providing both assurance and other services to their clients. Upon closer examination, however, more is involved than just independence. The erosion of CPAs' control of the entity making business decisions, which can indirectly affect the delivery of assurance services, could eventually put the profession's future role at risk. Such erosion can occur even when using an alternative practice structure in which only the CPA-controlled component makes assurance-related decisions. This concern relates to those making economic decisions, such as the allocation of human and financial resources.
