Under the Affordable Care Act of 2010 (ACA), all individuals are required to have health insurance, qualify for an exemption, or make a shared responsibility payment. Individuals without other sources of affordable health insurance for themselves and their dependents may be able to purchase coverage through the newly established healthcare marketplaces, and may also be eligible for a tax credit to help pay for the insurance. Large employers must offer minimum essential and affordable coverage to their employees or pay a shared responsibility payment. Smaller employers that are not required to provide insurance benefits for their employees may be eligible for a small-business tax credit to help offset the cost of insurance obtained through the marketplace.
