In BriefAlthough the CPA credential provides social and economic opportunities for its holders, a disproportionate share of minority accountants hold the certificate. Dating back to 1969 and the AICPA's Minority Initiatives Committee, several measures have been taken to increase the number of minority CPAs; however, African Americans still constitute only 3% of new CPAs. This study examines the factors that have contributed to the dearth of minority CPAs. The results suggest that job-related motivation, affordability of exam costs, and a lack of accounting role models contribute to the decision not to be a CPA. Gender differences also play a role: minority female accountants are much less likely to be CPAs than minority males. The results of these findings provide insight for state regulators, employers, and others who wish to expand diversity among CPAs.
