Alot has been said over the past several months about the National Football League's (NFL) tax-exempt status under the Internal Revenue Code. There are more than 25 subsections under IRC section 501(c) applicable to tax-exempt organizations. This may not come as a surprise to CPA Journal readers, but, to the general public, a tax-exempt entity is a “charitable” organization. As an IRC section 501(c)(6) organization (a trade association) the NFL is the administrative office representing 32 owners of NFL franchises. This has been the case for over 70 years. And, while other noteworthy sports groups, such as the NBA and MLB, have chosen to drop their tax-exempt status, the NFL has maintained its status—until very recently.
