Susan B. Anders, PhD, CPA/CGMA
Alarge majority of respondents to The CPA Journal 2022 Practice Management and Tax Practice Survey reported substantial difficulty in reaching an Internal Revenue Service representative, which comports with reports from both the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration and National Taxpayer Advocate on the IRS's performance during tax season 2022. IRS staff shortages resulted in long waits for taxpayers and tax practitioners to reach IRS helplines, as a strained IRS workforce was partially deployed to address a backlog of unprocessed returns.
