The title of this article is more than a little misleading. The future is now—effective CFOs not only know this, they strive to bring the future forward. Changes in business and technology have pushed CFOs into a world of constant transformation to drive increased productivity and profitability. This is generally a balancing act, because the newest technology and innovation always costs more than an expense-conscious CFO wants to spend. Therefore, CFOs are more akin to a financially savvy chief risk officer today, constantly managing the risk of losing out to the competition for one reason or another. An analysis of technology expenditures must take the long view to determine if the investment will pay back in the long run with sustainable profits.
