In BriefIn the early decades of the last century, women CPAs were not as common in the accounting profession as they have become today. The article focuses on the life and career of Jennie May Palen, the highest ranking and highest paid woman CPA from the 1920s to 1940s. The opportunities seized by Palen and other pioneering women at the firm of Haskins & Sells may have been necessitated by the personal disruptions caused by World War I, but the historical record indicates that once women were in the firm, they were well respected.
