Tax professionals are busy organizing their toolboxes for the 2020 tax season, and this month’s column aims to provide some helpful items for tax practice. More than half of the respondents to The CPA Journal’s Annual Tax Software Survey reported that they used commercial tax research products, and more than 70% used at least one free research resource. Many were also familiar with multiple commercial tools. Free websites are certainly useful, but generally don’t reach the value provided by commercial services with access to both primary source tax law as well as editorial discussion.
