In BriefNontraditional college students now make up a large percentage of the student body at many institutions of higher learning. Although non-traditional students are eligible to claim various tax benefits, they may not be aware of how to maximize these benefits, nor how to avoid potentially unexpected tax consequences, such as the possibility that educational assistance could be taxable in certain circumstances. The authors discuss tax planning strategies for these students, including issues related specifically to veterans and investment planning.
