Over the past decade, growing numbers of disruptions have affected higher education in the United States. State support of universities has declined substantially, and significant changes have been made to the federal financial aid system. There have been increasing calls for accountability and evidence documenting the value of a college education. Two forces in particular—the rise in online education and financial pressures for state-funded colleges—have resulted in an increase in the number of courses (including business and accounting) offered online. Some have questioned the quality of these online courses, as compared to traditional face-to-face classroom accounting instruction. In fact, a recent Gallup poll found that only about one-third of respondents rated online programs as “excellent” or “good” (Allie Bidwell, “Americans Doubt the Rigor and Quality of Online Education,” U.S. News, Oct. 15, 2013).
