Among the chief concerns of successful business owners is being able to maintain their lifestyles and meet their financial goals after they have sold their business. Sales of businesses are typically complicated and laden with emotional issues that require particular care. Owners are selling their means of livelihood, and more—the configuration of their financial portfolios. Sellers must make the transition from relying on business earnings to living off the liquid investments generated by the sale. Many business owners see this trade-off as inherently risky. These issues, and some alternative approaches for solving the problems entailed in the sale of a successful closely held business, are discussed below.
