The notion of triple bottom line (TBL) reporting has received increased attention during the past several years from non-governmental organizations, managers, consultants, and investors looking to invest in socially responsible companies. More than half of the global Fortune 500 companies and almost half of Standard & Poor's 100 companies issue TBL reports. Investors use TBL reports and their own measurements for valuing companies. According to a PricewaterhouseCoopers 2010 study, “Creating Value from Corporate Responsibility: Does Your Reported Data Get the Respect it Deserves?,” activist shareholders targeted more than 80 U.S. companies in various industries during the 2010 proxy season with resolutions for better disclosure regarding management of potential business impacts related to sustainability risks and opportunities (www.pwc.com/us/en/corporate-sustainability-climatechange/publications/creating-value-from-corporate-responsibility.jhtml).
