Frank M. Messina, DBA, CPA
An article in the January 1999 CPA Journal set out the criteria needed for medical student loan payments to be considered tax-free (Frank M. Messina and Zoel Daughtrey, “Medical Student Loans: Making Repayments Tax-Free”). Yet when medical, dental, and nursing students are asked if they are aware of the unique ability to have their student loans paid off tax-free, the overwhelming majority still answers “no.” CPAs need to be aware of the relevant changes to tax law in order to help such individuals answer these questions correctly.
