Much is expected of New York State, given its motto, “Excelsior”—to strive ever upward. Its history is rich with examples of societal needs that motivated citizens to act. In 1807, New York launched a new era in transportation with the Fulton steamboat. Later in the 19th century, it opened its doors as a haven for the oppressed of Europe. It has served as America's principal port for overseas commerce, produced the first secretary of the treasury and first chief justice of the Supreme Court, and hosted the first women's rights convention. The New York Stock Exchange is also the home to the world's financial underpinnings.
