Sexual Harassment

A poll of almost 600 staff in the fund management industry has found that the number of people who said they have suffered sexual harassment at work has grown from 20 percent in 2014 to 32 percent in 2016, according to the Financial Times. Outside of direct harassment, the number of women reporting sexist behavior at the office also rose, from 30 percent in 2014 to 72 percent in 2016. A third of women said they had considered leaving the industry because of this treatment. The Financial Times noted that, given the tone at the top of many finance companies in terms of promoting diversity, the dramatic rise could be seen a sign more women are willing to speak up about things they didn't before.

Many women do not seem to be optimistic about things getting better anytime soon: only 30 percent of women thought the situation had improved over the past five years, versus 55 percent for men.
