Making Networking Work by Reducing Friction

According to a Fast Company report, when it comes to networking, approach is essential. Outreach tends to stall or introductions fall through not because your contact doesn’t want to help but because a request is unclear or time-consuming.

One common issue is asking someone to introduce you to another person. Even if they want to help, it adds extra work for them, and they might not get around to it. Instead, ask if you can contact the person directly and mention your mutual connection.

If your contact prefers to make the introduction, send them an email they can simply forward. This saves them time and lets you highlight your experience and value. As the piece says, the main idea is to “make it easy” for others to help, rather than expecting them to write the message for you.

Clarity matters as well. If your message is too general or unclear, your network may not know how to help. When you make a specific request, it’s easier for people to see how they can assist.

These tips underline that making your requests clear and easy to act on is crucial in networking, so your connections can truly help you progress.
