At a time when more CPAs than ever are working from home, the IRS has warned of a new phishing scam specifically targeting tax professionals, according to Accounting Today.

Targets receive an email saying that their Electronic Filing Identification Number has been placed on temporary hold, and that it will be suspended unless they open an embedded document that confirms or denies whether they submitted a Form 1040. This document, the IRS says, likely contains malware.

The IRS urged tax professionals to be alert and to follow cybersecurity steps such as having multfactor authentication for system access, having strong passwords on all devices, never opening strange emails or documents that might carry malware, and having strong security software and keeping it updated.
