Court Says Facebook Friends Don't Count as Real Friends

A recent appeals court decision in Florida has confirmed what many across the Internet have already known: it takes more than a Facebook connection to be friends, according to FastCompany. The matter involved a law firm that petitioned to have a judge removed from another case because one of the attorneys was Facebook friends with her. The firm argued that the judge cannot be impartial because of this. The appeals court judge, though, said that just because someone is friends on Facebook does not mean that they're close friends offline, and is not enough to demonstrate that there's a conflict of interest. With the growth of social network sites, the judge said, the word "friend" has a slightly different connotation than it does in casual conversation.
