Keeping your skills up to date is more important than ever as AI continues to shape the accounting profession. While technical know-how is still important, Accounting Today reports that success now depends on having a broader and more adaptable skillset.
Because of these changes, many CPAs are rethinking their approach to continuing professional education. Rather than treating CPE as a formality, firms and professionals are encouraged to see it as a real opportunity to grow. As Jen Cryder of Accounting Today puts it, “continuous, forward-looking upskilling is the secret ingredient that will help CPAs turn expertise into the type of lasting relevance that drives career success.”
Supporting employee development also helps with retention. Research from the Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants shows that opportunities for professional growth are a top reason people stay at their firms. More than 70% of professionals say they want to remain with their current employer, but this often depends on having real chances to build their skills.
At the same time, changes in firm structures are adding new challenges. As firms hire more mid-career professionals instead of entry-level staff, they often need to train people who do not have a traditional background in public accounting.
In this environment, skills such as communication, ethical judgement, and the ability to work across different areas are becoming more important for CPAs.
