Can AI Replace Accountants?

Despite frequent speculation, Accounting Today predicts that AI will not replace accountants anytime soon. According to Chris Gaetano, technology editor at Accounting Today, the technology is improving, but so far it falls short of displacing human professionals.

While repetitive tasks are increasingly automated, the shift has instead clarified the value of accountants who are judgement-driven, adaptable, and can operate within a complex framework of trust and responsibility.

Professionals across the industry point out that automation may streamline workflows, but it cannot yet manage ambiguity, explain decisions under audit, or take accountability for mistakes.

Prashant Ganti of Zoho noted that AI still struggles to meet the ethical and regulatory expectations placed on real accountants. Others, like Be Radical’s Kacee Johnson, argue that accountability itself is irreplaceable, no system can substitute for a person who owns their work.

Nevertheless, some believe that entry-level roles are vulnerable and that firms must adapt their pipelines accordingly. As Wesley Hartman put it, if firms fail to elevate early-career staff quickly, they risk having no senior talent left in five years.

Most agree that AI will change the profession, not eliminate it. While the shape of the profession is still shifting, it remains anchored in human insight.
