Senate Request for Tax Filing Relief for America Act Support

Dear Senator Gillibrand:

On behalf of the New York State Society of CPAs, I am writing to respectfully request your support for S. 3535, the Tax Filing Relief for America Act, which is being introduced today by Senator Thune.   This legislation will delay the filing deadline for Federal income tax returns originally due April 15, 2020 to July 15, 2020.  This is important legislation that will provide tax filing relief for taxpayers and tax practitioners affected by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

This legislation is necessary because the Treasury Department has provided taxpayers with ONLY a postponement of the due date for certain Federal income tax payments, but no postponement for the filing of any tax returns or information returns.   This creates inconsistency and confusion for taxpayers and tax preparers, in addition to the unexpected obstacles of maintaining safety for quarantined and at-risk citizens.

Please contact Joseph Boddicker at  Joseph_Boddicker@thune.senate.gov  in Senator Thune’s office today to list the Senator as a co-sponsor of  S.3535.

The New York State Society of CPAs strongly supports S. 3535, the Tax Filing Relief for America Act and urges you to include it in the Phase III stimulus package.  Please do not hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions and thank you for your work to provide relief to our country’s citizens during these unprecedented times.

Sincerely,

Joanne S. Barry, CAE
