NEW YORK (April 23, 2013) – J. Michael Kirkland, CPA, will be installed as the 2013–2014 President of the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants Board of Directors at the organization’s 117th Annual Election Meeting and Dinner, May 16, at the New York Marriott Marquis at Times Square.
Kirkland, a director in the Deutsche Bank AG, Accounting Policy and Advisory Group, is the second African- American to lead the Society in its 116-year history.
At the annual dinner, 15 other NYSSCPA members will be installed into new positions on the Board,the Society's annual CPA awards will be presented and the formal announcement of $182,000 in college scholarships to New York students will be made.
A member of the NYSSCPA since 1982, Kirkland was the recipient of the 2011 NYSSCPA’s Outstanding CPA in Industry Award, which recognizes CPA financial executives with records of outstanding professional achievement in a private business or industry. He is also the recipient the 2013 National Association of Black Accountants (NABA) National Achievement—Public Accounting Award.
A Mount Vernon, New York native, Kirkland attended Mount Vernon High School and is a graduate of Fordham University, Bronx New York College of Business Administration. He began his career with Arthur Andersen & Company and has also worked for Banker’s Trust Co. and JP Morgan Chase.
He is also a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the National Association of Black Accountants, Inc., the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy and the Accountants Club of America.
With the NYSSCPA, Kirkland has served as president-elect and as a vice president of the Board of Directors and Executive Committee. He is a member of the Real Estate Task Force and the Curriculum Committee for the Foundation of Accounting Education. He served as president of the Manhattan/Bronx Chapter, co-chair of the Industry Outreach Task Force and as a member of the Finance, Bank and Minority Group Recruitment & Equal Opportunity committees.
He has been married to his wife, Barbara, for 38 years.
