NEW YORK (April 11, 2013) – Jeffrey R. Hoops, a partner with Ernst & Young and a former president of the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants (NYSSCPA), has been named the 2013 winner of the Society’s Distinguished Service Award.
Hoops will be honored at the NYSSCPA’s 116th Annual Election Meeting and Dinner on Thursday, May 16 at the New York Marriott Marquis at Times Square. The annual award recognizes CPAs who have distinguished themselves as Society leaders and have given outstanding service to the Society and the profession through dedicated service, publications, public service and other activities.
Hoops, a member of the NYSSCPA since 1976, has served as president, vice president, a member of the Board of Directors, as chair of the Consolidated Returns, Tax Division Oversight, Affiliated and Related Corporations and Annual Conference committees and as a member of Mergers and Acquisitions, Finance and Taxation of Financial Products committees and the Strategic Planning Task Force.
“Serving in various roles at the Society has been one of the most rewarding parts of my professional career,” Hoops said. “My membership has made me a better CPA. Committee service allowed me to work on issues that went beyond my day-to-day job.
“It has broadened my perspective as a business person and a professional. I learned how to get things done in an atmosphere of collaboration with government officials, our members and other stakeholders. I worked with great professionals. In short, I have gotten as much as I have given,” he said.
In addition, Hoops has also served on the New York State Board of Public Accountancy and as a member of the Board of Directors of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA).
In the award nomination letter about Hoops, Barbara Dwyer, CPA and a former member of the NYSSCPA Board of Directors, wrote: “what I have found most valuable over my years of service with Jeff is that he is very aware of the small and medium practitioners’ concerns which he has balanced with the concerns of the large national/international firms as changes have occurred in our profession to lead to consensus.
Hoops has spent his entire career as an accounting and tax professional. He joined Ernst & Young (then Ernst & Ernst) in 1974, transferred to the firm’s national tax department in 1981 and to its New York City office in 1983. He was admitted as a partner in 1984. In 2005, he was appointed as the firm’s first Americas Ethics and Compliance Officer.
Hoops is also member of the Executive Council of the New York City High School of Economics and Finance, is a member of the Advisory Board of the New York City Academy of Finance, and has taught graduate students at New York University and Long Island University.
He received a bachelor of business administration in public accounting from Hofstra University and a master’s in taxation from Long Island University (CW Post).
He and his wife Glenda have been married for almost 39 years. They have two daughters, two sons-in-law and six grandchildren.
