Gen Z Can Be a Transformative Force in the Office Despite Reputation for Being 'Difficult'

According to a report by Fortune, Gen Z, the newest generation in the workforce, has drawn criticism for being perceived as “difficult to manage,” by their own peers. Yet, with their fresh perspectives, bold ideas and commitment to values, Gen Z is poised to reshape workplace in positive ways if employers learn to meet them where they are. 

The challenges often cited—like a lack of professional readiness or differing work styles—stem largely from unique circumstances. Many Gen Z workers entered the job market in the wake of the pandemic, missing out on traditional college milestones and early career experience, such as internships. As a result, employers like Deloitte and PwC are bridging the gap with targeted soft-skills training, helping young professionals build confidence in areas like presentations and collaboration. 

Despite these growing pains, Gen Z offers distinct advantages. This generation is deeply values-driven, with half of them willing to decline jobs that don’t align with their beliefs. They bring a fresh perspective to hiring, prioritizing candidates’ hobbies and interests as indicators of creativity and culture fit. These approaches, while unconventional, inject innovation and inclusivity into the workplace.

Rather than viewing Gen Z as “difficult,” companies should see them as an opportunity for transformation. Their boldness and adaptability can invigorate organizational cultures, especially when paired with guidance and support. Companies that invest in mentoring and flexible work environments will be better positioned to harness Gen Z’s potential. 

History shows that every generation faces criticism in its early years—millennials were once labeled “entitled” before becoming key contributors to the workplace. Gen Z is no different. By fostering collaboration and understanding, employers can unlock the strengths of this promising generation, creating a dynamic workplace that thrives on diversity, innovation and shared purpose.
