NEW YORK—At
the NYSSCPA’s Annual Leadership Conference, held July
8–10 at the Gideon Putnam Resort and Spa in Saratoga Springs,
N.Y., Society officers and board members met with chapter leaders
and committee chairs to discuss issues related to the continued
growth and success of the accounting profession in New York.

| IRS Announces
New Random Audit Program |

NEW YORK—The
IRS has announced plans for a new National Research Program (NRP)
that will allow more accurate reporting and even aid in the reduction
of the national tax gap. In a June 6 press release, the IRS said
that this NRP study is the first in what will be several annual
studies using an “innovative multi-year rolling technology.”

Finds Conflicts of Interest in Pension Sector |

WASHINGTON—In a report issued at the end of June, the Government
Accountability Office (GAO) observed that undisclosed conflicts
of interest involving employee retirement plans, such as private-sector
defined benefit plans, could both pose enforcement challenges and
lead to reduced pension benefits for retirees.

Appoints First-Ever Public Member to Ethics Committee |

The NYSSCPA’s
Professional Ethics Committee (PEC) has officially welcomed former
New York State comptroller and past Baruch College president Edward
“Ned” Regan into its ranks. Regan’s addition to
the committee roster is part of an effort to comply with the recommendations
set forth in the Quality Enhancement Policy Committee’s (QEPC)
white paper on ethics. Regan
is the first non-CPA member to hold a position on the PEC.
