Bill Targets Private Equity |

NEW YORK—Energized
at the end of June by what certain politicians referred to as an
unfair tax advantage enjoyed by the managers of private investment
partnerships, Rep. Sander Levin (D–MI) and other leading House
Democrats and members of the Ways and Means Committee, including
Rep. Charles B. Rangel (D–NY), introduced a bill (H.R. 2834)
that would, according to a committee release, ensure “that
any income received from a partnership, capital or otherwise, in
compensation for services is ordinary income for tax purposes.”

to 'Kiddie Tax' Close Loopholes in Law |

NEW YORK—On
May 25th, the Small Business and Work Opportunity Tax Act was signed
by President Bush, which, for the second time in two years, made
significant changes to the existing so-called “kiddie tax”
law.

| Two
months ago, the New York State Senate, for the fifth year in a row,
passed an accountancy reform bill (S5240) sponsored by Senator Kenneth
P. Lavalle (R–Port Jefferson). The NYSSCPA worked with and
supported Senator Lavalle. We also worked with representatives of
the Big 4, the Accountant’s Coalition, and the New York State
Education Department to draft a compromise bill.
