WASHINGTON—Despite prior indications that the smallest public companies could possibly be exempted from Section 404 of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002, the SEC on May 17 announced that all public companies will eventually be compelled to comply with Section 404—regardless of the size of the company.

Fire District Auditing Sparks Interest in Albany

ALBANY—In an effort to increase the transparency of volunteer firefighter service award programs and improve the financial oversight of fire districts and companies in the State of New York, the NYS Assembly recently passed A10478—similar in some respects to a law now governing school districts—which will amend town law and general municipal law by requiring fire districts with more than $200,000 in revenue to conduct “yearly independent audits.” Click here...

IRS: New Record for E-filed Returns

NEW YORK—The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance recently announced that a Department-sponsored illegal tax shelter amnesty program, dubbed the “Voluntary Compliance Initiative” (VCI), has resulted in the collection of $345 million in previously unpaid state taxes. Total taxes collected via the VCI program, which ran from Oct. 1, 2005, through March 1 of this year, exceeded original estimates by more than 300 percent, according to the Department of Taxation and Finance.
