Clarify 18-Month CPA Exam Window |

NEW YORK—In
a vote at its February meeting, the New York State Board of Regents
approved a regulatory amendment to section 70.3 of the Regulations
of the Commissioner of Education that included a provision to extend
the credit for any successfully passed section of the Uniform CPA
Examination “to be valid for a full eighteen months immediately
following the end of the examination window in which a candidate
sat for such section,” according to State Board Executive
Secretary Daniel J. Dustin.

Denounces Tax-Strategy Patents |

NEW YORK—A
contentious issue since the 1998 Federal Court of Appeals case (State
Street Bank & Trust v. Signature Financial Group, Inc.)
that gave individuals and organizations the right to patent so-called
novel business methods, tax strategy patents have become an increasingly
divisive issue for CPAs and their clients.

Input Needed on Proposed Bylaw Changes |

Early in his
term, NYSSCPA President Tom Riley appointed a task force to review
the Society’s bylaws and recommend changes. The task force
includes Joseph L. Charles, Andrew Cohen, Martha A. Jaeckle
and Laurence Keiser and is chaired by me. We presented
a preliminary report to the Executive Committee in February which
authorized the membership exposure of the task force’s proposals.
The affected bylaw provisions are reprinted on page 10, and the
complete bylaws are available for review on the Society’s
website at www.nysscpa.org/society/bylaws.htm.
