Message From the President By John Savash, Finger Lakes Chapter President As we come into a new year and many of us prepare for the busy tax season, let me wish all of you a prosperous and safe New Year. The New York State Society of CPAs’ Finger Lakes Chapter encompasses the counties of Chemung, Cortland, Steuben and Tompkins. We were formed by the NYSSCPA to help end our professional isolation and promote networking and professional growth. I am pleased to state that when the current volunteers have organized activities, people do show up! On Oct. 23, 2003, we held the NYSSCPA Visitation and Ethics CPE supper at the Seneca Harbor Station Restaurant in Watkins Glen. Thirty-eight people attended this event and listened to NYSSCPA Past President Jo Ann Golden present the ethics part of the program. Society President Jeffrey Hoops also presented an update on certain legislative issues that the state officers of the NYSSCPA have been discussing. On Nov. 13, 2003, the Finger Lakes Chapter organized a social event at First Arena in Elmira. The Elmira Jackals hosted the Richmond Riverdogs in a United Hockey League game. The event started out with a pre-game food reception sponsored by Paychex, Inc. Twenty-eight people attended this event, and everyone seemed to have a good time watching the game. With a total chapter membership of 132 persons, this turnout shows that the chapter is serving a useful function. To keep this momentum going, the chapter needs to develop a large enough group of volunteers so that the task of organizing events does not fall unfairly on anyone’s shoulders. How can you volunteer? Join the chapter board of directors. There are five officers: president, president-elect, vice president, secretary and treasurer. We can elect an additional eight persons to serve on the board of directors. Officers serve a single year, and members of the board serve two-year terms. Since we have no board members at this time, some will serve one-year terms and some will serve two-year terms so that each year only a portion of the board needs to be replaced. A functioning chapter will help advance the CPA profession in our area and enhance your own career, and you can even have fun (can you imagine?). With a full complement of officers and a board, there will be a very equitable and manageable division of responsibilities. We will decide what is possible and not possible to accomplish. Please contact me to learn more about becoming a member of the NYSSCPA Finger Lakes Board of Directors. John Savash can be reached at 607-735-1943 or jsavash@elmira.edu. |
