Twice as Nice; Reaping the Benefits of Increased News Coverage By Zev Landau, Queens Chapter Secretary The Queens Chapter officers have heard that many chapter members wish to be informed more frequently about activities, programs, community affairs and other issues that may have an impact on their business and employment interests. When we found out that the NYSSCPA’s Board of Directors approved a three-month trial period for The Trusted Professional to be published twice monthly, instead of just once, we agreed with the editors that the members of our chapter, and others, will have new opportunities to reap the benefits of getting news and event information in a timelier manner. We believe that there are other benefits that this venture could generate for our members as well. For example, in accordance with the first mission of the Society, members will be able to “cultivate, promote and disseminate knowledge concerning (CPAs)” more frequently. In the same way, we will be able to communicate with you more often about our agenda. By reading the publication more often, more practioners may find stronger incentives to join the Queens Chapter, attend our events and become members of our committees. In addition, reading news from other chapters twice a month may inspire the Queens Chapter to organize new events that are conducted in other counties and have not yet been experimented in Queens. The Trusted Professional presents an opportunity for publicity. It is said that for advertising and public relations, people have to pay, but for publicity, they have to pray. If any of you want to share with the readers an event that you attended in the borough of Queens, or a professional issue that deserves the attention of other subscribers, please call a chapter officer. Your affairs promote not only the Society’s interests and the chapter’s mission, but your reputation as well. The Queens Chapter executive board has always believed that attracting accounting students into the accounting community is a major priority. This is why we organized a job fair last month. If you need accounting students, CPA candidates or young CPAs to help you during the forthcoming tax season, contact us and we will connect you with the human resources to assist you. If you employ a young CPA, spread the word and tell him or her to send an inquiry to our Vice President Ralph Cenname, who is also chairman of the Young CPAs Committee (ralph.l.cenname@smithbarney.com). In the November 2003 edition of The Trusted Professional, we mentioned how fortunate we are to work in conjunction with St. John’s University. This January is another time that the careers of young professionals in Queens are on our agenda; we will inform you about these events in subsequent editions. Some colleges in Queens have initiated “job shadowing” programs, which may be of interest to you. These programs deserve publicity because of the potential benefit for so many parties. For more information on that issue, contact me at Zevlandau@aol.com. We anticipate more exciting activities will take place in 2004; we assure you that you will be fully informed. We hope that more of you will contribute to our efforts by joining our chapter. We wish all of you a smooth tax season. Zev Landau can be reached at CPAChannels@aol.com. |
