Claiming the EITC

Editor’s note: The following information is provided by the New York City Department of Consumer Affairs.

This serves as a reminder to tax preparers to look out for the earned income tax credit (EITC) on individual tax returns.
It is estimated that 230,000 individuals in New York City qualify for the EITC but fail to claim it. Under Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s leadership, New York City is launching a broad outreach campaign to educate potential recipients. A coalition of government agencies, corporations and community organizations is spreading the word via media and materials distribution.

Tax preparers can do their part by ensuring that all clients who qualify for this credit are claiming it.

To learn more about the EITC, please refer to Publication 3107 at www.irs.gov. When EITC is recognized as a financial resource citywide, everybody wins.
