Committees Offer Dual Rewards
Contribute to Your Proficiency and Benefit the Profession: Join a Committee for 2004–2005

By Ernest J. Markezin, Director, Committee Services

Participating in a New York State Society of CPAs committee is one of the most effective ways for members to practice and perfect their skills while contributing to the Society and the profession, and now is the time to join.

There are a variety of active committees for those interested in enhancing their technical proficiency and career potential, in having a voice in the legislative and regulatory process, and in making business contacts and giving back to the profession through mentoring or educational program development.

To join a committee, you may apply online by going to www.nysscpa.org, clicking on “Find Committees” link on the left side of the page, and then clicking on the “Committee Application” link on the right side of the page. You may also contact Nereida Gomez, committee services manager, at 212-719-8303 or at ngomez@nysscpa.org.

Members currently serving on committees no longer are required to go through an annual reapplication process. In September of last year, the Committee Operations Committee, in response to committee membership, approved a streamlined procedure based on the principle that members who volunteer to serve on committees typically desire to do so for periods longer than 12 months.

Current-year committee member service is automatically carried over to the next committee year unless a committee member notifies the Society that he or she does not wish to continue, or the chair deems that his or her service is no longer required.
Committee members can check their committee service history through their online member profile by clicking on “Change Your Info” at www.nysscpa.org and then clicking on “Committee Service.” Beginning Jan. 1, a check box will appear alongside your listed committees for members who want to notify the Society that they no longer wish to serve on a particular committee.
