Society Names Nominating Committee

The Honor Was All Ours

New York State Society of CPAs President Jeff Hoops presents former New York State Tax Commissioner Arthur Roth with a plaque to honor him for his years as the head of the Department of Taxation and Finance.
“I accept this award on behalf of all the people at the Department of Taxation,” Roth said in a short speech on Nov. 13 at the Marriott Marquis hotel in New York City. Roth praised his staff for elevating the quality of work the department performs, and expressed his appreciation for the profession as a whole.
“I believe the people who chose this profession are very good and they want to do good,” Roth said. Society members referred to Roth as a “father figure” for the profession.

NEW YORK—The New York State Society of CPAs has selected members to sit on the 2004 Nominating Committee, charged with selecting Society officers for the next fiscal year. The board of directors also has recommended other members to represent the Society at the American Institute of CPAs.

During the Society’s Annual Election Meeting on Nov. 13, NYSSCPA members nominated eight members by petition this year, requiring the board to fill one vacancy. Under new NYSSCPA bylaws—which increased the size of the committee from nine to 11—if the Society receives nine or fewer eligible candidates, those members automatically are put onto the committee, and the board must appoint members in addition to the two members it customarily appoints, to ensure that exactly 11 members serve on the committee.

By David P. Cho, Assistant Counsel

CPAs doing business as a limited liability company (LLC) may have to buy newspaper ad space if they plan to have access to the state’s court system, according to a ruling in October by the Appellate Division of the New York Supreme Court that upholds the constitutionality of a statute requiring LLCs to publish their company data.
