Members Encouraged to Join Committees

By Nereida Gomez

The New York State Society of CPAs has recently sent out committee service brochures for the 2002–2003 committee year. Networking opportunities and forums for exchanging ideas among peers are just two of the many rewards committee members enjoy.

Members can choose from more than 60 committees under the following six divisions: accounting and auditing, Consulting Services, Future of the Profession, Industry, Operations, and Tax.

Except for Operations, all committees within a division report to their respective oversight committee. Operations Division committees report directly to the Society’s Executive Committee. As done in the past, the Committee on Committee Operations oversees the operations of the oversight committees.

Given the number of committees that exist, finding one to join is easy and well worth the effort. For example, the Industry Division has 17 committees that concern specific industries such as apparel and textile, banking, health care, and publishing and printing, as well as additional areas of interest to chief financial officers. These committees provide forums where members from disciplines such as accounting, auditing, tax, and consulting, among others, are able to network and contribute to the Society.

The committee term begins June 1. The Society expects that the new committee structure that went into effect last year, and is designed to better address member needs, will continue to encourage participation.
