Society Seeks Nominations for New Officers and DirectorsBy Simon EskowThe recently designated New York State Society of CPAs’ Nominating Committee will meet Jan. 18 to begin the process of nominating people to fill those vacancies in Society officer and director positions that will be opening up on June 1, 2002. The committee will be making nominations for president-elect, secretary, four vice presidents, five at-large directors and 10 board members associated with the Society. All officers serve for one-year terms, according to James Woehlke, counsel with the NYSSCPA. “Normally, all directors serve three-year terms; however, some board nominees associated with the six new, provisional chapters will serve for one- or two-year terms to maintain a balance of staggered directors’ terms,” Woelkhe said. The committee faces a larger number of nominations than in previous years because of the addition of six new chapters that came into being last June. Society bylaws require there be a board member from each chapter with 25 or more members. The committee will seek nominations for board members associated with the Adirondack, Brooklyn, Central Southern Tier, Manhattan/Bronx, Nassau, Queens, Rochester, Rockland, Staten Island and Suffolk chapters. Chapter leaders in each of these chapters will be proposing names to the nominating committee for their respective board members. Nominating Process Defined by Bylaws The committee’s nine members were named at the NYSSCPA’s Annual Membership Luncheon on Nov. 15 in New York City. Members at-large selected seven nominating committee members, including former Society presidents Robert Israeloff, Robert Fagliarone and Frank Nusspickel. The other member-designated nominating committee members are Charles Barragato, Susan Barossi, Anthony Maltese and Leslie Thompson. Two board-designated members—Raymond Nowicki and Sandra Napoleon-Hudson—complete the list of nine committee members. The committee will file a report on the nominations with Sharon S. Fierstein, the NYSSCPA corporate secretary, by Feb. 12, listing the nominees and confirming that they have consented to serve if elected. The report will also be posted on the Society’s website at www.nysscpa.org, and mailed to the entire membership in a NYSSCPA publication, before the annual election meeting in May. Members may also make independent nominations by filing a petition with 100 signatures (with a certification that the nominee consents to serve if elected) by March 20. These petitions should be addressed to Sharon S. Fierstein, Corporate Secretary, NYSSCPA, 530 Fifth Avenue, 5th Floor, New York, NY 10036. “Anyone who is interested in being nominated by the Nominating Committee should contact one of the Nominating Committee members as soon as possible,” Woehlke said.
