Young CPAs Ace Public Speaking

By Howard Silverman, CPA

The Northeast Chapter Young CPAs hosted “Taking the Fear Out of Public Speaking” on Oct. 26. Thoroughbred Toastmasters representatives conducted the event, a mini Toastmasters meeting, during which local CPAs delivered impromptu speeches on a variety of subjects including:

  • If you could have witnessed any historical event, which one would you choose and why?
  • What would you say if you were awarded the World’s Greatest Certified Public Accountant?

Participants responded enthusiastically to these difficult questions on the fly—and did a tremendous job.

Toastmasters develop public speaking skills by speaking to groups and working with others in a supportive environment.

In addition to facilitating audience participation at this particular event, Thoroughbred Toastmasters representatives demonstrated their public speaking skills with speeches of their own.

The participants’ improved speaking ability, achieved in just a short period of time, points to the value of becoming involved in a local Toastmasters chapter. For information about Toastmasters, including the location of clubs in your area check out their website at www.toastmasters.org.
