Nonprofit Conference to Address A&A, Operations Issues

Track for Industry Members

By Lori Pendleton

FAE's 22nd annual Nonprofit Conference will take place January 19, 2000, at the Holiday Inn Rochester Airport Hotel in Rochester and January 27, 2000, at the New York Hilton Hotel and Towers in New York City. According to Michael McNee of Paneth Haber & Zimmerman LLP, chair of the NYSSCPA Not-for-Profit Organizations Committee, the conference's sponsor, this year's program will combine an update on the accounting and auditing issues faced by nonprofits with an operations overview tailored to industry professionals.

"Not only does the conference provide a one-stop environment for an overview of relevant nonprofit issues, but various tracks appeal to managers," McNee said. "As many as one-third of our attendees are from industry, and we've developed a track that addresses their specific concerns."

The conference begins with an accounting and auditing overview, including an update from Allen Fetterman of Loeb & Troper LLP and an OMB update from governmental and nonprofit consultant W.A. Broadus. The accounting and auditing overview is followed by a legal and tax update from Michael Cooney of Nixon Peabody. Both sessions will review new accounting and auditing standards, recent court cases, and UBIT issues.

"The morning sessions are for everyone, but the afternoon breakout sessions cover specific topics--some geared toward CPAs, others toward executives who are running not-for-profits," said Julie Floch of Richard A. Eisner & Co. LLP, who co-chairs the conference with Jeffrey Green of Buchbinder Tunick & Co. LLP and John Oehler of Lumsden & McCormick LLP.

In the afternoon, participants can choose from concurrent sessions that address their areas of interest, including new sessions that examine ongoing changes in the nonprofit sector.

"We have more of an industry focus this year," Floch said. "Board governance is a whole new area we're covering, our fraud session is more in-depth than ever, and we've got other sessions on mergers, audit risk, compilation issues, and insurance."

"Our new enterprise resource planning session covers both computer and management issues," McNee added. "It will examine computer issues that relate to efficiency in nonprofit operations."

The NYSSCPA member fee for this conference is $250 in New York City and $220 in Rochester; the nonmember fee is $350 and $320, respectively. The conference is free for POP Pass holders.
