Education Pays

Anchin, Block & Anchin LLP named its 2003–2004 scholarship recipients, two talented accounting students attending Baruch College. The company’s founders, David C. Anchin and Max Block, were both former NYSSCPA leaders who attended Baruch College, then known as City College, and who promoted education as a key to advancement within the company, as well as throughout the accounting profession. Anchin, Block & Anchin awards two separate $500 scholarships, the David C. Anchin Memorial Scholarship and the Max Block Memorial Scholarship, to Baruch accounting students with the highest GPAs who are in need of financial aid.

Min Ci Rong, a native of China and a student at Baruch, will put her Block Memorial Scholarship toward her general accounting studies. Beside her are Jim Anchin (right) and Jeff Rosenthal, both partners with Anchin, Block & Anchin.

NEW YORK—The New York State Society of CPAs has moved into its new offices at 3 Park Ave.

On Oct. 12, the Society relocated to its new headquarters on the 18th and 19th floors of the southeast corner building at 34th Street and Park Avenue. The new interior offers the Society increased options for event planning.

The structural design of the 19th floor allows for conferences accommodating up to 150 people. By holding conferences in-house, the Society has more ability to control its budget by avoiding escalating hotel costs. The new FAE Conference Center will hold approximately 15 conferences this year that otherwise would have been held at hotels.

In addition to these cost and quality advantages, the Society also considered the geographic benefits of relocating to Park Avenue.

President's Commentary

By John J. Kearney

1947 could be remembered for many different reasons. Fifty-seven years ago, Tennessee Williams’ debuted A Streetcar Named Desire on Broadway; the National Security Act created the Central Intelligence Agency and the Department of Defense; test pilot Chuck Yeager broke the sound barrier; Jackie Robinson took the field for the Brooklyn Dodgers; and President Harry Truman implemented the Truman Doctrine to fight the spread of communism. However, as I write this column, I look back to that year for one purpose only: 1947 is the last time the New York State Legislature made any substantial changes to the state’s accountancy law.
