Students Can Benefit from NYSSCPA Membership

By Ben Kaplan, Recruitment Specialist

The New York State Society of CPAs has recently made it much easier to join the Society as an Associate Student member. In an effort to encourage and grow student membership, the Society has slashed the price of its student membership to $5 and opened eligibility to all interested students (not just accounting majors).

Students have been taking notice. Over 1,000 of the Society’s 30,000 members are now student members—about a 26 percent increase over last year—and that number is expected to swell in the coming months.

So what’s all the fuss about? Here is a list of the benefits of the $5 Associate Student membership in the NYSSCPA:

  • Find a Great Job: Our Career Opportunities Handbook lists companies around New York state looking for accountants and interns. The handbook is online under the “Future CPAs” link found at the top of the Society’s website, www.nysscpa.org. Students can also post their résumés and search for jobs through our affiliated job-hunting website, www.careerbank.com.
  • Opportunities to Network: Students have access to thousands of accounting professionals through participation in one of 17 local NYSSCPA chapters across New York state. More than 60 statewide committees provide similar access to the best and the brightest.
  • The CPA Journal: Rated by members as the most popular service offered by the NYSSCPA, The CPA Journal is the only peer-reviewed magazine for and by certified public accountants in America. The magazine is a critical and objective source of information for professionals that is required reading in some firms.
  • The Trusted Professional: The Society’s newspaper provides students with timely Society and accounting news, written in to-the-point prose.
  • Technical Assistance and Know-how: Accounting is a complex and diverse discipline. The Society is a valuable resource for accounting, auditing and tax questions or problems. Student members can call the NYSSCPA staff directly for tax assistance and draw on members’ knowledge by participating in local Society events.
  • Group Benefits: Members get discounts tailor-made for students looking for deals on computers, electronics and credit cards. Many of these programs take advantage of group discounts obtainable only via membership in the Society.
  • Political Advocacy: Our 30,000-strong membership means that our voice—and yours—is heard in Congress and the state legislature through Society advocacy efforts. Students can get involved with the Society’s own political action committee, CPA PAC.
  • Discounted Professional Education: The educational arm of the Society, the Foundation for Accounting Education, provides year-round seminars and conferences to meet your need for quality continuing professional education. Best of all, these programs are available to NYSSCPA members at a discount.
  • Online 24/7: The Society is online at www.nysscpa.org. Students can access virtually all of our services via the Web at their convenience. Students can review and register for courses, check the latest accounting news, and review their personalized, secure Web page that tracks any CPE credits taken with the Foundation for Accounting Education.
  • $5 a Year!: Students receive all of these benefits for only $5 a year!

Interested students can sign up online at www.nysscpa.org/membership/app_form.htm. Or, students may call or e-mail Ben Kaplan, recruitment specialist, at 212-719-8362 or bkaplan@nysscpa.org.
